Together, we can help reduce homelessness
People who are experiencing homelessness are valuable. Together with local churches and nonprofits, we are continuing on our collaboration that will allow for our winter shelter to be open every night. This allows us to provide consistent volunteering roles for churches, and constant wrap-a-round services for people experiencing homelessness in Elgin this winter. In order to do this, there are three ways you can help:
This year, the Elgin Winter Shelter will be open nightly from December 15, 2024, to March 15, 2025. The Shelter will be limited to Elgin residents only. If temperatures drop to 15ºF or lower between December 1-14, 2024, and March 16-31, 2025, the shelter will also open on those nights. Located at First United Methodist Church, 216 E Highland Ave, the shelter will provide a safe, warm space from 8 PM to 7 AM. Volunteers will assist with duties as prescribed by the Shift Leader such as assisting with check-in/check-out, implementing shelter guidelines, checking on guests, cleaning, etc.
There are 3 volunteer shifts:
1st Shift: 7:30 pm - 12 am (3 people)
2nd Shift: 12 am - 4:30 am (2 people total)
3rd Shift: 4:30 am - 7:30 am (2 people total)
